Ms. Hooker is most definitely a figurative painter but she is equally dedicated to the human and to the animal figure. Her work relishes in playful “pop” subjects using bold contrast, hot color, and ‘big statement’ compositions. She revels in extracting her subjects from the typical landscape they inhabit and placing them onto a backdrop that is curiously intriguing, like notebook paper or aged, textured barn wood. Whether painting people or wildlife there is a distinctively western vein that runs through all of Annie’s work. Yet she employs a modern sensibility in her sometimes wistful or nostalgic paintings.
“My artistic inspiration stems from my love for iconic, classic, American ‘characters’ both human and animal. I design my paintings to be noticeable from a distance, like silhouettes of something you clearly recognize from afar but become more enchanted by as you are drawn in closer to see the details. My philosophy is to make enlivening paintings that excite me and my senses. So my work is just that, combining my love for figurative painting, American history, realism, pop-culture, and poetry.”
